Upstate Athletics Attends National Convention of Women Leaders in College Athletics

Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate athletics recently had three female student-athletes and one staff member travel to Dallas, Texas to attend the National Convention of Women Leaders in College Athletics.

Attending the convention were Academic Advisor Susan Kolb, softball student-athletes Tarynn Tirpak and Kendsey Chappelear, and track and field student-athlete Kennedy Holton. The student-athletes were chosen based on a selection process open to all juniors and seniors at Upstate. Those wishing to participate had to submit a statement on why they wanted to go and must have a desire to serve in a leadership role. The trip was paid for by a one-time NCAA grant.

"I have been a member of Women Leaders in College Sports for six years, but to experience a convention with three of our senior student-athletes was by far the best one yet," said Kolb. "I was so proud to be with these ladies for four days and see them come out of their shell, ask questions, take notes, and observe some of the strongest women in college athletics."

The convention, held Oct. 8-10, gave the Spartan student-athletes an opportunity to attend an event that encourages, as well as inspires, women to join the intercollegiate athletics field. The student-athletes were also able to participate in power panels and workshops consisting of female athletic directors, coaches, etc. regarding revenue generation, Title IX and student-athlete time demands. They met other athletic department personnel and student-athletes and were able to discuss a variety of topics with one of those being the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

"The convention is always an amazing opportunity for professional development and each year I come back inspired with great ideas and empowered to contribute to the success of our athletic department," Kolb added. "I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this amazing organization."

The student-athletes were able to take away valuable information from the convention including social networking, relationship building and mentoring opportunities.

According to their website, the Women Leaders in College Sports National Convention is the premier leadership summit for women working in intercollegiate athletics and beyond. Women Leaders in College Sports is guided by values such as Excellence, Leadership, Diversity, Equity, Education, Advocacy, Empowerment and Commitment.
