Athletics 100 Days Report

UPDATE FROM ATHLETICS DIRECTOR JULIO FREIRE

Sir Richard Branson once said that, "A company's employees are its greatest asset and your people are your product."  Through my first 100 days as the Athletic Director and Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics I truly believe that statement.  During my first 100 days I have been able to meet with our coaches, staff and administration, and there is no doubt in my mind that the University of South Carolina Upstate athletics department is blessed with wonderful, caring and capable people who have the student-athletes best interests at heart.  As I travel throughout campus and interact with the campus community the same stands true.  It is also true as I travel throughout the region and meet with our alumni, fans, friends and supporters there is no doubt that our community bleeds Green and Black.  I take this tremendous opportunity and responsibility very seriously and want nothing but the best for our USC Upstate student-athletes.  GO SPARTANS!

GO #BIGSOUTH OR GO HOME

USC Upstate made an exciting announcement on November 15 regarding the future of its athletics department.  The Spartans were extended an invitation to join the Big South Conference beginning on July, 1, 2018, pending USC Board of Trustee approval on December 19.  This move was made for many reasons, but two of the primary ones were our student-athletes and geography.  Four of the rival schools in the Big South are within 65 miles of the USC Upstate campus meaning our campus community, alumni and fans will be able to travel to more game.  The reduction in team travel is also a huge asset to our student-athletes because it means 1,200 fewer classes will be missed due to travel.  All teams will be immediately eligible to compete for conference championships and is supported by all 10 of our head coaches.

BASKETBALL, BASKETBALL, BASKETBALL

There is plenty of basketball, both on the men's and women's side, with the season just tipping off last week for both sports.  On October 20 we announced that former associate head coach Kyle Perry was promoted as the ninth head coach in men's basketball history.  I could not be more excited about the work and energy that Kyle has brought to this program and it has already shown on the basketball court.  He won his first career game on November 12, 85-66, against Allen, and has also taken 15th-ranked Minnesota and Georgia to the brink during their first two road games.  Head coach Tammy George has her women's basketball program is full gear to begin their season after opening the year at East Carolina.  The women have three starters returning this year and eight letterwinners total and play a total of 16 home games this season.  There are still plenty of opportunities this season to watch the Spartans in action!  Check out the men's schedule and women's schedule.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO THE DOME!

Homecoming 2018 is fastly approaching for USC Upstate so make plans now to return to Spartan the week of February 5-10, 2018.  The Spartans basketball programs will be in action that weekend facing Florida Gulf Coast at the G.B. Hodge Center.  The university and athletics department invite you back to campus to celebrate with fun, family-friendly activites and events.  Visit the homecoming page for more details.
