SPARTANBURG, S.C. - For the third consecutive year, the USC Upstate track and field team will travel to Clemson, S.C. for its final meet prior to the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships. The two-day Orange & Purple Classic will begin on Friday at 5:00 p.m. with the men's and women's discus throw and the men's and women's long jump. Saturday's events will kick-off at 10:00 a.m. with the men's javelin and the men's and women's shot put.
It is also the second trip that the Spartans have made to Clemson this year. During the indoor season, Upstate competed at the Clemson Games. Due to the winter weather that passed through the area, the Spartans competed on just the first day of the event. A new school record was recorded in the pole vault as Justin Crawford (Elgin, S.C./Lugoff-Elgin) set a new mark of 4.48m en route to a third place finish.
Two other records fell at the Clemson Games, both coming in the 60-meter hurdles. On the men's side, Brandon Curry (Anderson, S.C./Pendleton) posted a new mark of 8.63, while Camille Masanotti (Ladson, S.C./Stratford) set a new mark for the women's team (9.55).
Joining the Spartans at this weekend's meet will be fellow A-Sun members ETSU and Kennesaw State. Host institution Clemson as well as Virginia Tech and Wake Forest from the Atlantic Coast Conference will be competing as well as Southeastern Conference member South Carolina. Other competing teams include Charlotte, Charleston Southern, College of Charleston, Furman, Gardner-Webb, Radford and Western Carolina.
Following this weekend's meet, the Spartans will travel to Jacksonville, Fla. for the 2010 A-Sun Outdoor Championships hosted by the University of North Florida. The two-day championship event will begin on Friday, May 14 and will conclude on Saturday, May 15.
