The Polls Are Open: Vote Now for the Top Division I Moments
In 2007-08, USC Upstate embarked on a new journey for its athletics program, transitioning its sports team from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I as members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. After four years of competing as a transitional member of Division I, Upstate is poised to receive full certification by the NCAA with all teams eligible for postseason play in NCAA and A-Sun championships.

Childers, Meissner Named Student-Athlete of the Year at Upstate Athletics Awards Banquet
Spartanburg, S.C. - The USC Upstate Athletics Department held its annual Pepsi Awards Banquet Thursday night and softball pitcher Morgan Childers and track & field sprinter Mike Meissner received the two highest honors while being named the Student-Athlete of the Year. In all, the Athletics Department gave out 66 awards and made other special recognitions on the night.

Crawford Wins Pole Vault Championship at A-Sun Championships
Jacksonville, Fla. – USC Upstate pole vaulter Justin Crawford came to the 2011 A-Sun Outdoor Track & Field Championships having already claimed an A-Sun title in the event in 2009. He topped that performance, claiming the pole vault championship with an A-Sun record height of 4.75 meters to highlight a solid day for the Spartans.

Kemboi, Meissner Reign Supreme at A-Sun Indoor Championships
Johnson City, Tenn. – USC Upstate’s Gilbert Kemboi won his third career A-Sun indoor conference championship when he broke the meet record to successfully defend his championship in the 5,000-meter run. His teammate Michael Meissner, who is the reigning A-Sun 400-meter outdoor champion, proved he can rule the conference indoors as well after winning the 400-meter title as the 2010 A-Sun Indoor Championships wrapped up on Saturday at the MSHA Athletic Center at East Tennessee State University.

JOHNSON CITY, TENN.—USC Upstate men’s and women’s track teams got off to solid starts on the opening day of the 2011 Atlantic Sun Indoor Track and Field Championships, which are being held at the MHSA Athletic complex at East Tennessee State University. After the opening day of competition, the Upstate men sit in fourth-place with 27 points, trailing Campbell for the third spot by just one point, as the Camels posted 28 points on the opening day.

SPARTANBURG, S.C.—Fresh off a strong performance at the Niswonger Invitational last weekend in Johnson City, the Upstate men’s and women’s track teams will be back in action this weekend at the Tiger Paw Invitational in a final tune-up for the Atlantic Sun Championships in next weekend, as the Spartan track teams will return to Johnson City for the conference meet. Head coach Jimmy Stephens will not be taking a full complement of athletes to the meet, but will be taking some to compete in the event in order to improve upon times in certain events before heading to the conference championships in a couple of weeks.
