Upstate Track & Field Posts Strong Results at Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's and women's track and field teams opened the outdoor season yesterday at the Charlotte 49er Classic with action wrapping up today.
Senior Carolyne Chelulei (Eldoret, Kenya) posted the best finish for the Spartan women, crossing the line in 17:30.80 in the 5,000-meter for second-place, while classmate Joan Tangwar (Eldoret, Kenya) earned sixth in the women's 1,500-meter with a time of 4:37.17.
In the men's 5,000-meter junior Davey Dennison (Carlisle, Pa.) came in sixth with a time of 14:59.63, while junior Kenny Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif.) finished eighth in the hammer throw with a toss of 53.44 meters.
Sophomore Matt Johnson (Elgin, S.C.) qualified for the men's 400-meter dash finals, which will take place today. He posted a preliminary time of 48.07. In the prelims of the men's 110-meter hurdles, junior Brandon Curry (Anderson, S.C.) recorded a nine-place finish with a time of 15.01, just missing the finals.
