Spartans Sweep A-Sun Men’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week Honors
MACON, Ga. – Juniors Kenny Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif.) and Gilbert Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya) of the USC Upstate men's track & field team were named the Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week and Men's Track Athlete of the Week, respectively as announced today.
Sugishita tallies three-career conference weekly awards, collecting all three during the 2011-12 campaign. At the Winthrop Invitational March 30, Sugishita broke two school records, registering program-best performances in every meet since the outdoor season started three weeks ago. The junior earned first-place in the shot put with a throw of 15.65-meters (51-04.25), beating his previous mark of 15.08-meters (49-05.75) set March 17 at the 49er Classic. Sugishita came in third in the hammer throw at the Winthrop Invite with a toss of 55.75-meters (182-11), passing his school record of 55.05-meters (180-07) set March 24 at the Catamount Classic. With his performances this weekend, Sugishita ranks first in the A-Sun in the hammer throw and second in the league in the shot put.
This marks Kemboi's fourth-career A-Sun Track Athlete of the Week honor and the second this season. Kemboi claimed first-place in the men's 10,000-meter at the Raleigh Relays March 30 with a school record time of 29:51.99. The junior's time ranks first in the A-Sun this season and fourth nationally.
Upstate returns to action April 6-7 as some team members will travel to the Duke Invitational, while others will stay in Spartanburg, S.C., to compete in the Terrier Relays hosted by Wofford. Follow the Spartans this season on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
