SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's and women's track & field teams travel to Cullowhee, N.C., Friday and Saturday for Western Carolina's Beynon Sports Catamount Classic.
The Upstate women's team opened the 2013 outdoor season last weekend at Charlotte's 49er Classic, breaking five school records. The freshman trio of Brenicke Johnson, Heaven Briggs and Dominique Nock led the way for the Spartans as Johnson posted a program-best time of 12.09 in the 100-meter dash, Briggs clocked in with a school record time of 25.12 in the 200-meter dash and Nock had an Upstate record leap of 5.55-meters (18-02.50) in the long jump.
Johnson, Briggs and Nock then joined classmate Semaj Tolliver to set a program record in the 4x100-meter relay, crossing the line in 46.62. Later that afternoon, Briggs and Nock teamed with junior Ashley Edmond and freshman Ashleigh Torres in the 4x400-meter relay, turning in a school record of 4:02.69.
This weekend, Briggs, Johnson and Nock are slated to compete in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and the 4x100m relay, while Nock will also participate in the long jump. Sophomore Brittany Walls is entered in the heptathlon; she set the school record in the pentathlon during the indoor season with 3176 points.
On the distance side, freshmen Anastasia Kolesnitchenko, Torres and Molly Bliss will run in the 800-meter. Kolesnitchenko turned in the best time for the Spartans last weekend in the event, clocking in at 2:20.06, while Torres finished in 2:22.03 and Bliss in 2:23.89. Sophomore Jasmine Polite will compete in the 1,500-meter run, after crossing the 3,000-meter finish line in 10:56.49 last weekend.
For the Spartan men, senior Cameron Thomas will return to action this weekend at the Catamount Classic. He is slated to race in the 800-meter run, after claiming second-place in the event at the 49er Classic with a personal-best time of 1:51.76. Thomas will be joined in the 800-meter by junior Ross Oden, who posted a time of 15:05.43 in the 5,000-meter last weekend. Oden will also compete in the 1,500-meter alongside classmate Andrew Kipchumba, who clocked in at 4:08.21 in the event last weekend.
Upstate senior hurdler Brandon Curry is scheduled to participate in his signature event this weekend. He took 12th-place in the 110-meter hurdles at the 49er Classic, crossing the line in 15.51.
Senior Kenny Sugishita also returns to the field at Western Carolina this weekend with entries in the hammer and discus. The Spartan thrower came in seventh in the men's discus finals at the 49er Classic with a toss of 50.02-meters (164-01). Sugishita turned in another sixth-place finish in the hammer throw at Charlotte with a hurl of 55.27-meters (181-04).
