Spartans Wrap Up Competition at Charlotte Invite

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's and women's track & field teams wrapped up competition Friday at the second day of the Charlotte Invitational, marking their final meet before the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships next month.
A trio of seniors came up big for the Spartan men Friday as Christian Ritacco led the way with a first-place finish in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line with a season-best time of 9:38.05. In the men's 1,500-meter, Gilbert Kemboi came in second with a time of 3:58.02. The Spartans earned another second-place finish in the men's discus throw as Kenny Sugishita turned in a toss of 49.14-meters (161-03).
Upstate junior Matt Johnson crossed the line fourth in the men's 400-meter race, clocking in at 49.19. He was followed by freshman Tracy Fisher with a time of 51.91. In the men's 200-meter dash, freshman Carlton White finished fifth with a personal record time of 22.51. White just missed his season-best time in the men's 100-meter dash, finishing in 11.37.
Fisher tied his personal-best mark in the men's high jump, clearing 1.83-meters (6-00.00). Upstate junior Joshua Powers recorded a leap of 6.16-meters (20.02.50) in the men's long jump. In the men's 110-meter hurdles, senior Brandon Curry turned in a time of 15.36.
On the women's side, freshman Anastasia Kolesnitchenko finished fifth in the 1,500-meter with a personal-best time of 4:47.97. Her classmate Nia Payne trailed in ninth with a personal record time of 4:56.37.
Upstate freshman Dominique Nock matched her school record time in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 24.47 to earn a fourth-place finish. Her classmates Heaven Briggs and Sarah Thomas followed in the event with times of 25.54 and 25.93, respectively. Junior Ashley Edmond tied her season-best time in the 200-meter, crossing the line in 26.17. Freshmen Semaj Tolliver and Brenicke Johnson trotted behind with times of 26.71 and 26.93, respectively.
Nock picked up another fourth-place finish in the 100-meter dash, recording a time of 12.09. Tolliver followed with a personal-best time of 12.23 as did Briggs, who finished in 12.32. Brenicke Johnson and sophomore Shawanda Stokes posted times in the event of 12.32 and 13.05, respectively.
In the women's long jump, Thomas claimed fifth with a personal-best leap of 5.29-meters (17-04.00). Nock finished eighth with a mark of 5.21-meters (17-01.25), while Stokes turned in a jump of 4.92-meters (15-02.00).
The Spartans crossed the line first in the 4x100-meter relay as Tolliver, Nock, Briggs and Brenicke Johnson teamed up to post a time of 46.73. In the women's 4x400-meter relay, Edmond, Nock, Briggs and Tolliver joined forces to record a time of 4:11.45.
