NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its All-Academic teams and individuals for track & field Wednesday afternoon and the USC Upstate women's team was named to the list, while graduating senior Gilbert Kemboi represented the Spartan men on the individual list.
This marks the first All-Academic honor from the USTFCCCA for the women's track team. The Spartan women's cross country squad earned All-Academic accolades from the organization back in the fall. The Upstate women's track & field team snagged the award with a 3.12 team GPA. Four other Atlantic Sun Conference teams earned the recognition as ETSU, Jacksonville, Lipscomb and league newcomer Northern Kentucky all landed on the list.
For the second-straight year, Kemboi garnered USTFCCCA All-Academic status for men's track & field. The sociology major was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team back in the fall for cross country. He concluded his storied career at Upstate collecting A-Sun's highest honors, being named the A-Sun Male Student-Athlete of the Year and A-Sun Postgraduate Scholarship recipient last month.
All of these honors came after Kemboi's senior campaign, which saw him earn Capital One Academic All-District team honors and receive the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship as one of only 58 student-athletes in the country. He holds a 3.587 GPA and is a five-time A-Sun Scholar-Athlete of the Year in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field since the league introduced the award in 2011-12.
The Eldoret, Kenya native defended his conference titles at the A-Sun Indoor and Outdoor Championships this past season. Kemboi collected his fourth championship in the 5,000-meter and third in the 3,000-meter at the 2013 A-Sun Indoor Championships. He followed those performances a few months later, winning conference crowns in the 10,000-meter and 5,000-meter races at the outdoor championships. He went on to finish 17th in the 10K at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships this spring.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in the an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
