SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Joan Tangwar and junior Gilbert Kemboi of USC Upstate's women's and men's cross country teams were named the Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Runner of the Week and Men's Runner of the Week, respectively after the first week of competition in the 2011 campaign.
Upstate hosted its annual Eye Opener Invitational Sept. 2 as Tangwar took top honors in the women's 5K, beating 166 competitors to help the Spartans to a fifth-place team finish. She posted a school record and course record with a time of 17:06. This marks Tangwar's fourth career conference Runner of the Week award.
"Joan had a great race on Friday considering the stormy weather conditions," said Carson Blackwelder Upstate's interim head cross country coach. "Her work outs have proven that she is in great shape and ready to run fast."
Due to lightening in the Spartanburg, S.C. area Friday night, the women's race was delayed 35 minutes. To avoid darkness, the men's and women's races were run at the same time.
Kemboi won the men's 8K, finishing in 24:52 and crossing the line 52 seconds before second-place. He finished ahead of 155 runners, helping the Spartans to a fourth-place overall team mark. Kemboi collects his seventh career A-Sun weekly accolade.
"Gilbert had a solid win and looked smooth throughout the race," Blackwelder said. "It's nice to start the season off with two Runners of the Week."
