SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's and women's cross country teams travel to the Clemson Invitational Friday.
The Spartans will be competing against runners from Anderson, Chattahoochee Tech, Converse, Davidson, Erskine, Florida State, Furman, Georgia Tech, King College, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and host Clemson. The women will be running a 6K Friday, instead of the usual 5K.
Earlier this season, Upstate hosted the Eye Opener Invitational Sept. 2 as senior Joan Tangwar and junior Gilbert Kemboi took top individual honors in the women's and men's races, respectively. Tangwar led the Spartan women, posting a school record and course record with a time of 17:06, while Kemboi put up a time of 24:52 in the men's 8K
Tangwar's teammate Jemeli Sang claimed second-place at the Eye Opener, registering a personal-best time of 17:34, while Carolyne Chelulei finished 17th with a time of 19:12. The senior trio helped the Upstate women's team to a fifth-place finish.
On the men's side, sophomore Andrew Kipchumba took 14th at the Eye Opener with a time of 26:40, while junior Christian Ritacco claimed 16th, crossing the line in 26:40 to help the Spartan men to a fourth-place finish.
