SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Joan Tangwar and junior Gilbert Kemboi of USC Upstate's women's and men's cross country teams were named the Atlantic Sun Conference Runners of the Week for the second time this season. This marks Tangwar's fifth-career conference weekly award and Kemboi's eighth, the most in the A-Sun.
After three races this season, the Spartans have collected three A-Sun weekly accolades for the women's team and two for the men. Tangwar and Kemboi both received Runner of the Week honors earlier this season on Sept. 7, after the first week of competition.
Tangwar won her second race of the season Friday night, posting an Upstate record with a time of 16:53.7 in the women's 5K at the Charlotte Invitational and beating 289 other competitors. She helped the Spartan women to an 11th-place finish out of 36 six teams.
"Joan had a great race, leading from the gun to the finish," said Upstate associate head coach Carson Blackwelder. "Getting a time under 17 minutes has been a goal of hers all season and she finally got it on Friday."
In the men's 8K, Kemboi earned a second-place finish with a time of 24:14.0, beating 256 other runners, helping the men's team finish sixth out of 34 teams. Upstate competed against runners from three ACC schools in Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. The Spartans also ran against South Carolina, an SEC program, as well as athletes from numerous other teams ranked in the South and Southeastern Regions.
"Gilbert ran a strong race Friday," Blackwelder said. "He is in good shape and keeping his eye on the conference and regional meets."
