Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate cross country teams will make their first trip outside of South Carolina on Friday as they travel to Grimesland, N.C. for the Pirate Invitational at Lake Kristi. East Carolina is the host school for the meet.
This is the first time that the Spartans have ever competed at Lake Kristi and will also be their first race of the season running at a 6K distance for the women and an 8K distance for the men. The women's race begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men at 6:05 p.m.
The Spartans had seven personal-best times at the Upstate Invitational on Sept. 30. All eight runners for the women's team ran their fastest times of the season with Marcy Bradshaw, Krysta Pierstorff and Shamia Thompson finishing under the 20-minute bracket. Dorian Jones led the men's team with a 16th place finish in 25:51.20. It was his first sub-26 minute time of the season.
Joining the Spartans on Friday are East Carolina, NC State ("B" team), Duke, UNCG, UNC Asheville, The Citadel, College of Charleston, Winthrop and Norfolk State in the Division I portion of the race. Elizabeth City State and Saint Augustine's will compete in the non-Division I portion of the event.
The Pirate Invitational is the final tune-up for the Spartans before the ASUN Cross Country Championships hosted by Kennesaw State on Oct. 28.
