SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Playing their best baseball since a six-game win streak in late February, USC Upstate, which jumped 14 spots in the WarrenNolan.com RPI thanks to four wins last week, will head into a treacherous midweek looking to continue their hot play in games at No. 5 South Carolina on Tuesday before heading to No. 26 Clemson on Wednesday.
Senior Jimmy Tanner also heads into the two-game set looking to leave his permanent mark on the USC Upstate baseball program, as he needs just one more hit to pass John Caddell (2004-07) for first on the all-time hits list. Tanner posted six hits over the weekend against Campbell to tie the mark with his last hit, a three-run homer for his 241st career hit, on Saturday.
Senior Tyler Oliver is currently tied for second in school history with 76 career appearances ... He is just one more away from the school record of 77 set by former teammate Dennis McCraney (2006-09).
Since April 13, when senior Tyler Oliver picked up the win in relief against the College of Charleston, the senior is 1-0 with three saves and a 3.18 ERA ... He has established a new career-high for saves in a season (4) and his seven career saves are now tied for sixth in school history.
Senior Jimmy Tanner has started 127 consecutive games for the Spartans since not finding his name in the lineup for the second game of a doubleheader at UNF on March 22, 2008 ... Tanner's streak is the longest since Chris Nowak started all 161 games in his three-year career from 2002-04.
Since breaking out of a 2-for-23 slump, junior Joe Barnes has gone 22-for-49 (.449) with 12 runs and six RBI in the last 12 games.
In his last 10 games, freshman Trey Richardson is hitting .429 (15-for-35) with seven runs and nine RBI.
Upstate is hitting .348 as a team in the last five games, averaging 7.2 runs per game in that time, as four players are hitting better than .400 in that period, led by senior Jimmy Tanner (.535) ... Junior Andre Harris (.455), freshman Trey Richardson (.444) and junior Joe Barnes (.435) are the others.
Senior Jimmy Tanner is currently ninth in the A-Sun with a .384 batting average, tops amongst catchers in the league ... He is also tied for seventh with 61 hits and with a .484 on-base percentage.
Junior Philip Brannon has posted a 1-0 mark and a 2.08 ERA in his last two appearances, striking out three in that time ... He earned the win in a seven-inning start against Campbell and threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief against the College of Charleston.
The Spartans have come-from-behind for wins in eight of their 13 victories, falling behind at some point in the game before coming back to win ... The team also has three walk-off wins.
