Baseball Falls on the Road at No. 25 Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – USC Upstate senior outfielder Blake Green (Rock Hill, S.C.) finished 3-for-5 at the plate and pitched three relief innings but it was not enough as No. 25 Charlotte claimed a 18-6 victory on Wednesday night at Hayes Stadium.

Charlotte (27-6) jumped on the Spartans early with three unearned runs in the first inning, followed by a five-run second inning to take an 8-0 lead after just two innings.

The 49ers tacked on two runs in both the third and fourth innings to increase the lead to 12-0.

Upstate (12-24) finally broke through in the fifth when Anthony Vacca (Fonthill, Ontario) scored on Tyler Cook's (Bloomington, Ill.) double down the left field line.  Cook, who advanced to third on the throw, was able to score on a wild pitch.

The Spartans added four runs in the top of the sixth to cut the Charlotte lead to six at 12-6.  Luke Weber (Spartanburg, S.C.) homered to left and his two-run blast also brought home Austin Liput (Oviedo, Fla.).  Branden Millhouse delivered a two-RBI single to center as Grason Wiggins (Statesboro, Ga.) and Cook scored.

Charlotte added six more runs over their final three trips to the plate, including a four-run seventh, setting the final margin at 18-6.

Charlotte starter Joe Yermal improved to 2-1 on the season after allowing just two runs on four hits in five innings on the mound.  The redshirt junior struck out two and had zero walks on Wednesday.

Spartan starting pitcher David Roseboom (Pattersonville, N.Y.) took the loss after going 2/3 of an inning after being removed from the game due to an injury.  Roseboom gave up three runs (all unearned) on two hits and three walks.

Upstate used a total of six pitchers on Wednesday including a trio of position players.  Wiggins pitched the third and fourth innings and was followed by Green, who pitched the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Green pitched a scoreless fifth inning and Liput pitched the final frame for the Spartans.

Aside from Green's 3-for-5 performance, the Spartans were led by Millhouse who finished with two hits and two RBI.

Upstate will return to action this weekend when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to face A-Sun foe Lipscomb beginning on Friday at 4:00 p.m. (ET).
