Thunderstruck: Spartans, Terriers Combine for 18 Runs Following 56-Minute Delay

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After the first two games of the season took nearly four hours, it wasn't too surprising that USC Upstate and Wofford had another four hour affair, this time, the Spartans were victorious, 12-7, in a game taking 4:04.

After 50 minutes of play, the game was breezing along with Upstate (16-32) holding a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.  And then a 56-minute rain/lightning delay ensued and heated up the chilly bats of the two teams (four combined hits before delay).

Tyler Miller (Fort Mill, S.C.) delivered a two-out RBI single in the fourth, allowing Gaither Bumgardner (Fort Lawn, S.C.) to score, putting the Spartans in front 1-0.  When the game resumed, Grason Wiggins (Statesboro, Ga.) earned a RBI via a bases loaded walk and Branden Millhouse (Summerville, S.C.) singled up the middle and tallied two RBI as Miller and Tyler Cook (Bloomington, Ill.) scored, giving the Spartans a 4-0 lead.

Wofford (21-28) added a single run in the fourth when David Roney scored on a fielding error by Wiggins.

Upstate quickly went back on the attack, adding three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  With Luke Weber (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Trey Richardson (Lakeland, Fla.) standing on second and third, respectively, Miller hit a ground-rule double over the wall in center field.  Cook followed Miller's double with a triple to the gap in left center, pushing the Spartan lead to 7-1.

In the sixth, Wofford's Taylor Rozier hit a two-run homer as he sent a 3-1 offering over the wall in left to cut the deficit to four (7-3).

In the home half of the sixth, Upstate tacked on a single run when Weber delivered a RBI single to left, allowing Richardson to score as the Spartans increased the lead to five.

Wofford made things interesting in the top of the seventh as they cut the Spartans' lead to just two-runs.  The Terrier seventh was highlighted by Mac Doyle's double down the left field line allowed a pair of runners to cross home plate.

The Spartans answered right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh, increasing the lead back to five runs.  Blake Green (Rock Hill, S.C.) singled through the right side allowing Cook to easily score from third.  Wofford reliever Bobby Streisel threw a wild pitch allowing Millhouse to score, while Green scored on an errant throw by Wofford catcher, David Roney.

The two teams each scored a single run in the eighth inning, setting the final tally at 12-7.

Scott DeCecco (Cape May Courthouse, N.J.) started on the mound for Upstate and pitched the first four frames before the delay.  DeCecco allowed just one hit and struck out three in his 54-pitch outing.  Spartan reliever Andrew Wyant (Newton, N.C.) earned the win after pitching the fifth and sixth innings.  The right-hander improved to 2-4 on the season after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with a pair of punch outs.

Wofford reliever Pete Noordsy (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on three hits with a walk and a strike out.

Miller finished Tuesday's game 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI, while Weber collected three hits, two runs and one RBI.  Cook and Millhouse added two hits each and combined for three runs and three RBI.

The Terriers were led by David Roney's 2-for-3 performance at the dish with two runs.

The Spartans return to action tomorrow night when they face The Citadel at 7:00 p.m. at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C.
