CHARLESTON, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the eighth inning en route to an 8-1 victory over Charleston Southern Wednesday at the CSU Ballpark.

With 10 straight wins, the Spartans (12-1) are tied with Gonzaga and Oregon for the nation's second-longest win streak.  Kentucky leads the country with a 12-game win streak.

After the two teams combined to strand 13 runners over the first seven innings of the contest, the Spartans were able to break through when Tyler Miller (Fort Mill, S.C.) singled thru the left side, and Trey Richardson (Lakeland, Fla.) scored from third.

Austin Liput (Oviedo, Fla.) followed with a single through the left side allowing Tyler Cook (Bloomington, Ill.) to score what proved to be the game-winning run.  Brody Greer (Honea Path, S.C.) followed with a two-RBI double to the gap in left center as Upstate took a 3-0 advantage.

After Charleston Southern (4-9) went three up and three down in the eighth, the Spartans went back on the attack in the top of the ninth.

Upstate again scored four runs as the team pushed its lead to 8-0.  Greg Guers (Langhorne, Pa.) was able to score thanks to a throwing error by third baseman, John Faircloth.  With Cook on first and Richardson on third, Miller sent connected on a three-run blast to complete Wednesday's scoring for the Spartans.

The Bucs were able to push across one run in the ninth as Ben Qualkinbush scored with two outs to end the Spartans bid for a shutout.

Eight of the nine Spartan batters recorded at least one hit and the team was led by Greer's 3-for-5 effort with two RBI.  Miller tallied two hits, two runs and four RBI while Jordan Stampler (Davie, Fla.), Cook and Liput also picked up two hits against Charleston Southern.

Upstate starter Ben Augenstein (Sebastian, Fla.) earned a no-decision after tossing 62 pitches (45 strikes) in 5.2 innings of scoreless baseball.  David Roseboom (Pattersonville, N.Y.) made a relief appearance on Wednesday and picked up the win after pitching perfect seventh and eight innings.  Roseboom (3-0) is now tied for the team lead in wins.

Charleston Southern reliever Corey Deighan was tagged with the loss and falls to 1-1 on the season.

Pinch-hitter Shane Miles tallied the only RBI of the afternoon for the Bucs with a ninth inning single.

The Spartans will return to action Tuesday night when they travel to Charlotte, N.C., to face the Charlotte 49ers.  First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
