Spartan Baseball Bites Bison, 7-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team (15-3, 3-0 A-Sun) shut-out Lipscomb (7-13, 0-3 A-Sun) 7-0 today at Harley Park, sweeping the three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series.

The Spartans jumped on the board in the first inning as junior Jordan Stampler (Davie, Fla.) scored off of a ground out by junior Gaither Bumgardner (Fort Lawn, S.C.). Upstate went on to plate a pair of runs in each of the next three innings for the final 7-0 score.

Upstate was led offensively today by Stampler and senior Austin Liput (Oviedo, Fla.). Stampler went 3-for-5 at the dish, scoring two runs. Liput posted a 3-for-4 day at the plate, batting in two runs. Junior catcher Brandon Patterson (Polk City, Fla.) assisted the Spartans at bat, going 1-for-3 with a triple in the second inning, while recording one run and two RBI. The Spartans tallied 11 hits on the day, compared to Lipscomb's eight.

On the mound for Upstate, junior Brandon Lee (Palatka, Fla.) improved to 3-1 on the season. The righty allowed eights, walked three and fanned seven Bison batters for a complete game effort.

Blake Fonfara took the loss for LU, falling to 1-3 on the year. He tossed 2.2 innings, giving up five runs on five hits with one strikeout. Tyler Burstrom pitched 4.1 innings in relief for the Bison, allowing five hits and two runs, while sitting down three Spartan batters. Davey Hackett gave up one hit and recorded one strikeout in one inning of work for Lipscomb.
