DeLAND, Fla. – With an 8-4 victory at Stetson Friday night, the USC Upstate baseball team claimed its seventh-straight league win Friday night at Melching Field.

Upstate cracked the scoring column first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning.  Luke Weber (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Greg Guers (Langhorne, Pa.) led off the inning with back-to-back singles down the right field line.  Weber scored on Tyler Cook's (Bloomington, Ill.) fielder's choice RBI to short; Guers was able to advance to second on Mark Jones' fielding error.  Guers, with two outs in the inning, scored (unearned) on Brody Greer's (Honea Path, S.C.) RBI single through the left side.

Cook, for the second straight inning, recorded a RBI via a fielder's choice allowing Austin Liput (Oviedo, Fla.) to score with two outs.  Liput's run gave the Spartans a 3-0 advantage after the top of the third.

Stetson scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the third as Robert Crews drove in Tanner Blackman, closing the gap to two (3-1).  The Spartans pushed the lead back to three runs (4-1) when Jordan Stampler (Davie, Fla.) scored (unearned) on Weber's single to the gap in right center in the fourth.

In the fifth, Upstate increased their lead to five runs thanks to a pair of runs in the top of fifth.  With two outs in the fifth inning, Trey Richardson (Lakeland, Fla.) doubled to left center and scored on Greer's single to center.  Greer scored on Stampler's single back up the middle, ending the night for Stetson starter, Kurt Schluter.  Tucker Donahue replaced Schluter ended the Spartan fifth as he forced Gaither Bumgardner (Fort Lawn, S.C.) to strike out.

Liput drew a walk to open to the sixth and after a Weber fly out, stole second.  Liput and Guers traded places as Guers doubled to the gap in left center.  Liput's second run of the contest gave the Spartans a 7-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the frame, Stetson loaded the bases and Kevin Lindheim grounded out to first, allowing Ben Carhart to score.  Carhart's run cut the Spartan lead to five at 7-2.

Cook scored the final run of the contest when he scored from third on Richardson's RBI double down the left field line.  Cook's run gave the Spartans an 8-2 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth.

Stetson made things interesting in its final at-bat as the club loaded the bases before the Spartans were able to record the first out of the inning.  Sam Kimmel drew a bases loaded walk allowing the Hatters to send the tying run to the on deck circle.

Upstate then made a call to the bullpen as Chad Sobotka (Sarasota, Fla.) was brought on to try to close out the Hatters.  Sobotka earned his 11th save of the season as he allowed just one inherited run to score while recording the final two outs of the contest.

David Roseboom (Pattersonville, N.Y.) earned his seventh win of the season after allowing two runs in 7.1 innings.  He scattered six hits during his 112 pitch outing.

Kurt Schluter took the loss for Stetson and fell to 5-3 after allowing four runs (six total) on nine hits in 4.2 innings.

Highlighted by Weber's three hits, four different Spartans tallied two or more hits Friday night.

The two teams will return to action tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.  Scott DeCecco (Cape May Courthouse, N.J.) is slated to get the start for the Spartans.
