SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior pitcher Ben Augenstein has been named the ninth recipient of the Thomas L. Smith scholarship announced today by USC upstate head baseball coach Matt Fincher.
A native of Sebastian, Fla., Augenstein played two seasons at Hillsborough Community College before making his way to USC Upstate for his junior season. In 2012, Augenstein worked in a variety of roles during his first year at Upstate, starting six games and serving as the primary reliever out of the bullpen.
He appeared in 20 games, working 56.2 innings and recording a 3.49 earned run average with 43 strikeouts and just 14 extra-base hits allowed on the year.
His work was emblematic of a vastly improved pitching staff, which led the program to a second place finish in the Atlantic Sun.
Augenstein has been a role model off the field as well, serving as a leader for the Spartans and a true student-athlete that will graduate with a degree in Exercise Science.
The USC Upstate baseball program and Head Coach Matt Fincher are pleased to present Ben Augenstein with the 2013 Thomas L. Smith Memorial Scholarship.
