SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After a pair of solid performances in the state of Florida, USC Upstate forward Jodd Maxey (Statham, Ga.) has been named the Atlantic Sun's Newcomer of the Week, the conference office in Macon, Ga., announced today.
Maxey shot a blistering 84.6% from the field and connected on 71.4% of his free throw attempts between the Spartans' two contests against North Florida and Jacksonville.
Maxey finished 5-of-6 from the floor and 2-for-4 at the line to total 12 points Saturday night at North Florida. The redshirt-sophomore also grabbed three rebounds in the Spartans 69-62 victory over the Ospreys.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak to UNF and gave Upstate 10 wins on the year, the most since making the move to the Division I level in 2007-08 (previous high: nine wins in 2008-09).
The S.C. State transfer reached double-figures for the fifth consecutive contest and sixth time this season with 15 points at Jacksonville. In the narrow overtime loss to the Dolphins, Maxey reached a new career-high with his 15 point performance. Maxey was 6-for-7 from the floor and a perfect 3-of-3 at the line while tallying two blocks, one steal and one assist.
For the week, Maxey averaged 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per outing.
The Spartans begin a three-game homestand Saturday when they host Belmont at 2 p.m. Upstate will also host Lipscomb (Jan. 23, 7 p.m.) and ETSU (Jan. 27, 7 p.m., A-Sun/CSS Game of the Week) during the three-game homestretch.
