MACON, Ga. – On the heels of scoring a career-high 31 points to lead the Spartans to an 88-77 victory over UTSA, junior forward Torrey Craig has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the week as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
The weekly honor marks the sixth time Craig has earned an A-Sun weekly award. He was named the Newcomer of the Week twice during his Freshman of the Year campaign, Player of the Week three times as a sophomore during his Player of the Year season and now earns the first weekly award of his junior year.
The 31-point outing against the University of Texas San Antonio last Saturday marked the 27th time in the last 30 games Craig has reached double figures. He has scored at least 10 points in 61 of his 73 collegiate games, leaving him with 1163 total points and a 15.9 points per game average for his career.
The Great Falls, S.C., native scored 11 of the team's first 13 points against UTSA, including four consecutive buckets to send Upstate to a 21-point first-half lead and eventually an 11-point victory. Craig finished the game 9-for-15 from the field, 2-for-7 from long range and 11-for-14 at the charity stripe. The 11 free throws made also set a career mark for the junior standout.
He also sparked an Upstate defense that held the Roadrunners to 22 points in the first half, including just 28 percent shooting from the field. The Spartans forced 14 turnovers in the game and Craig tallied one of his 12 steals this season.
"I am proud of Torrey's performance last week," Head Coach Eddie Payne said. "Not because he scored a career-high 31 points, but because he played the best defensive game of his career."
Craig leads the Atlantic Sun Conference in scoring at 19.2 points per game and ranks 42nd overall in the country. Lehigh's C.J. McCollum currently leads the nation at 24.9 points per game.
The Spartans are enjoying one of their longest breaks of the season, returning to action next Monday, Dec. 17 on the road at Baylor University. Tip-off in the Ferrell Center is slated for 8 p.m. EST and will be televised on Fox Sports Southwest.
