Horton Named A-Sun Golfer of the Week
Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate junior and Boiling Springs, S.C., native Brian Horton was named the A-Sun Golfer of the Week for the first time in his career after leading the Spartans to a second-place finish at The Match Play at Reunion. Horton finished the tournament 4-0 in four matches.
Horton had a standout tournament at The Match Play Monday and Tuesday. He claimed four wins to lead Upstate to a second-place finish with the team falling to 55th-ranked Notre Dame in the championship match Tuesday afternoon. He also led the Spartans to back-to-back victories over No. 59 South Florida in advancing to the championship match.
Horton began the tournament with a 4&3 win in his match against Illinois State's Jordan Fahel. He then led Upstate to a 4-2 victory of 59th-ranked USF in the second round with a 4&2 win in his match with the Bulls' Tommy Riehle.
On the final day of the tournament, Horton claimed a 3&1 victory over Riehle to help Upstate to the 4-2 victory over USF in the semifinals, advancing to the championship match. In the championship, Horton was one of two Spartans to win a match against Notre Dame, claiming a 4&2 victory over Tyler Wingo.
For his career, Horton owns a 75.8 stroke average with two top five finishes, including the 2010 individual championship at the Palmas Del Mar Collegiate Classic. He owns a .543 winning percentage head-to-head all-time and ranks third on the team this season with a 75.3 stroke average.
