Spartanburg, S.C. – Coming off winning the Charleston Shootout on Tuesday, the USC Upstate men's golf team will head back to the course for its third tournament in a span of 17 days when it competes in the Sacramento State Invitational Monday and Tuesday.
The Sacramento State Invitational is being played at Valley Hi Country Club. The course is a par-72 layout and plays at 7,009 yards. The tournament is a 54-hole event with 36 holes played on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. The teams will have a practice round on Sunday.
Upstate is one of 15 teams in the field, with two teams ranking in the Top 100 in the latest Golfstat rankings. Joining Upstate and host Sacramento State is Boise State, Cal State Fullerton (No. 80), Chico State, CSU Bakersfield, Houston Baptist, Loyola Marymount, Nebraska Omaha, Nevada, Seattle, South Dakota, Southern Utah, Texas Pan American and UC Santa Barbara (No. 97).
Upstate will send the veteran lineup of Adam Goins, Brad Sill, Matthew Hopper, Brian Horton and Ryan Conrfield into action at the Sacramento State Invitational. Sill, Hopper and Horton are seniors, while Goins is a junior. Though Cornfield is a freshman, he has played in every event this season and has proven to be battle-tested. Upstate is shooting 302.3 as a team for the year and has won two tournament titles.
Goins tops the team with a 74.9 stroke average and three Top 5 finishes on the year. Cornfield is second on the team with a 75.2 stroke average and owns two Top 10 efforts. Sill is third on the team with a 76.3 stroke average, has two Top 10 finishes, and won the Forest Hills Intercollegiate two weeks ago. Hopper has played in all but one tournament this year for Upstate, while Horton has missed two events.
