Spartanburg, S.C. – Returning a strong core of players from last year's team, including the top two players in stroke average in Adam Goins and Ryan Cornfield, USC Upstate head coach Todd Lawton has announced the fall men's golf schedule.
The Upstate men's golf team will play four tournaments this fall, two of which will be in South Carolina giving Upstate golf fans two opportunities to watch the Spartans in action.
"We will play a couple of 54-hole tournament played over three days, which is the format used in our conference tournament. I believe that will help us prepare for that type of format as we end the fall and move toward the spring," said Lawton. "We've added the tournament hosted by Francis Marion back to the schedule. It is a new format which I think will be really exciting. We have a strong tradition at Rutgers and look forward to returning to an event where we have enjoyed a lot of success. The addition of the Wisconsin tournament is going to be a great trip. Getting to play in a tournament hosted by a Big Ten school with its strong field and tradition should really help us as we build toward the spring season and the A-Sun Championship."
Upstate will begin the season at the Raines Development Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C., Sept. 9-10. The Spartans are making their third appearance in the tournament and the first since 2010 when it was known as the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate.
Upstate will make its sixth appearance in the Rutgers Invitational Sept. 13-14. The tournament is hosted by Rutgers at the Rutgers University Golf Course in Piscataway, N.J. The Spartans have enjoyed tremendous success in the tournament. They have won the team championship in each of the last two seasons, Adam Goins has won the last two individual titles, and Upstate has claimed three team and four individual titles in the tournament in five previous appearances.
Lawton has infused the fall schedule with a new tournament as Upstate will head to Madison, Wisc., to play in the Badger Invitational Sept. 29-Oct. 1. The tournament is hosted by Big Ten member Wisconsin at the University Ridge Golf Club.
Upstate will close out the fall schedule at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic Nov. 3-5. Charleston Southern is hosting the tournament on the Turtle Point Course at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. The Spartans are making their third appearance at the tournament.
Upstate will look to Goins and Cornfield to lead the team again this season. Goins, a senior from Gaffney, S.C., has led the team in stroke average in each of the last three seasons and posted a win, four Top 5 finishes and a 74.1 stroke average last year. Cornfield, a sophomore from Dudley, England, burst onto the scene as a freshman last year, finishing as the top Spartan in two of the first three tournaments of the year. He ranked second on the team with a 75.0 stroke average and two Top 10 finishes. In all, Upstate won two team and two individual championships in 2012-13.
