Spartanburg, S.C. – Coming off a spirited and competitive qualifying competition since classes started, the USC Upstate men's golf team will open the 2013-14 season Monday at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate in Florence, S.C.
The Springhill Suites Intercollegiate is being played at the Country Club of South Carolina. The course is a par-72 layout with and will play at 7,062 yards. Francis Marion is hosting the 13-team tournament. Joining Upstate and the Patriots in the tournament are Appalachian State, Elon, George Mason, Georgia College, Jacksonville, Longwood, Presbyterian, Radford, Samford and Wofford. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and close out the tournament with the final round on Tuesday.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton returns six players from last year's team that won two team and two individual tournament championships. The Spartans, though, lost three seniors off of last year's squad and will need to fill those holes. However, Lawton does return senior Adam Goins to the lineup. Goins has turned in a tremendous career and ranks second all-time in wins and stroke average. Ryan Cornfield also returns to lead the Spartans. He turned in a tremendous season as a freshman last year and posted a 75.0 stroke average for the year.
Lawton will send the lineup of Goins, Danny Brock, Sebastian Lopez Bulla, Taylor White and Cornfield into action this week at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate. Goins has played in 28 career events for the Spartans. Brock has played in three career events and is coming off a tremendous qualifying effort. Lopez Bulla came on at the end of the season last year and has played in four events. Cornfield played in all 10 tournaments last season, while White is making his collegiate debut as a freshman.
