Carter Sits in Top Five after First Day of Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate

Raleigh, N.C. – USC Upstate sophomore Matt Carter turned in the best two rounds of his career on Monday to lead the Spartan men's golf team following day one action at the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate from the par 71, 7358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course.

Carter is currently tied for third place with Kennesaw State's Chris Guglielmo after shooting rounds of 68 and 69 to sit three strokes back of the leaders at 5-under 137. The sophomore carded the lowest round of his career of 68 during the day's first round. The two rounds are the lowest this season recorded by an Upstate men's golfer.

"Matt had a great day today and I am so proud of the complete game he played," said head coach Todd Lawton. "This is a very strong field to hold the third-place individual spot."

The Spartans posted back-to-back rounds of 297 and are tied for 15th place in the team standings at 594. Upstate is three strokes back of George Washington for 14th place.

"We had three stellar rounds today and the rest wouldn't qualify as anything but mediocre," Lawton said. "We have to execute better and manage the way we play shots individually, and we will improve."

The Spartans also counted scores on Monday of 144 (68-76) by Taylor White, 156 (80-76) by Jordan Warnock, 157 (81-76) by Andrew Purcell and 162 (81-81) by Trey Taylor. White is the second highest Upstate golfer on the leaderboard in a tie for 30th position while Warnock is tied for 78th. Purcell ended the day tied for 84th place and Taylor rounds out the standings tied for 88th.

The 68 turned in by White during his first round tied his career-low round which occurred twice in 2014 at the Bash at the Beach and Camden Collegiate Invitational.

East Carolina leads the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate after two rounds at 550, five strokes in front of second-place Kennesaw State. On the individual leaderboard, East Carolina's Timothy Conover and Jacob McBride of N.C. State are tied for first at 8-under 134.

The final round of the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate will tee off Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
