Lawton Signs One during Early Signing Period

Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate head men's golf coach Todd Lawton has announced the signing of Conner Conkel to a national letter of intent during the early signing period. Conkel will join the program for the 2017-18 season.

While only playing major tournament golf for a short time, Conkel has had an impact as a team player at Greater Atlanta Christian Academy, and individually in junior golf around the Southeast and nationally.  Conker was an integral part of the Georgia Class 2A State Championship team as a junior in 2016, and is a leader both on and off the course. A strong student and leader, Conkel's golf game is strong off the tee and shows great potential as a collegiate golfer.

A native of Buford, Ga., Conkel has played many tournaments on the local, regional and national levels including recognized tours such as Hurricane Junior Golf Tour, Southeastern Junior Golf Tour, PHA Junior League Golf and Atlanta Junior Golf. He has posted Top 10 finishes in more than 20 events, including six Top 5 performances in 10 starts during the 2016 HJGT season.

"Conner is talented and determined," said Lawton. "He is a year-round competitor and that is a huge asset to his transition to college golf. He has shown the ability to travel and play in tournaments that are similar to college and plays successfully while doing so. He posts lots of birdies which is an essential element in competitive golf. With a strong academic record and exemplary leadership credentials, I am confident that Conner will help our program grow while improving his personal game at Upstate."

Conkel was an All-Region and All-Gwinnett County performer last season as Greater Atlanta Christian captured the state championship. He recorded an individual Top 5 performance at the Georgia Class 2A State Championships. At the tournament level in 2016, Conkel captured second and fourth place performances in two HJGT events at Greystone (Tenn.) and College Prep at UGA (Ga.). He has also competed in two international fields at the AJGA at Owenboro (Ky.) and City of London Championship (Ky.), finishing in 24th and 33rd places, respectively. He posted five rounds with scores of 72 during the four tournaments.

He is the son of James and Tammy Conkel.
