SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the first time in the D-I era and first time since 2004, the USC Upstate men's soccer program has had a player selected to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District Team as Chris McCoy (Houston, Texas/Tomball HS) earned a spot on the All-District First-Team.
McCoy joins Darren Ambrose (1992), Marion Burgess (1993), Sean Hartley (1995), John Andrew Rousseau (2002) and Gary Lynch (2004) as the only six Spartans to earn the prestigious honor.
The biology/pre-med major owns a 3.93 GPA and has had four semesters with a perfect 4.0 GPA during his time at Upstate. The redshirt junior is a three-time selection to the Atlantic Sun Conference All-Academic team.
McCoy missed the entire the 2009 season after having two hip surgeries, one on each hip, to correct injuries that have plagued him throughout his collegiate career.
By earning a spot on the All-District First-Team, McCoy will be on the Academic All-America Ballot which will be voted upon through Friday, November 12, 2010. The Academic All-American team will be announced on Wednesday, November 17, 2010.
Nominations and voting for the All-America programs are conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. There is a University Division (Division I programs) and a College Division (DII, DIII, NAIA, NJCAA programs).
