Upstate Opens Three-Match Road Trip Wednesday at Winthrop

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's soccer team opens a three-match road trip on Wednesday evening when its makes the short trip to Rock Hill to face the Winthrop Eagles at 7 p.m. from Eagle Field.

The Spartans are aiming for their third consecutive victory on Wednesday after winning each of their last two matches against Liberty and Wofford. Upstate is coming off a 2-1 victory over crosstown rival Wofford last Saturday for its first win over the Terriers since 1988. Lukas Sommer scored the game-winning goal for the Spartans on a penalty kick in the 84th minute. JR Cozine also recorded a goal and Anson Girone dished out one assist. Brady Moody, playing in his first collegiate match, played in 61 minutes off the bench and collected two saves for his first career win.

Upstate currently ranks second in the ASUN in corner kicks and is tied for third in goals scored. Cozine and Cam Philpot are both tied for fourth with two goals apiece, while Philpot is fourth in shots on goal, and tied for fifth in shots and points.

Winthrop enters the contest with a 1-2-1 overall record after falling 2-1 at Davidson last Saturday. The Eagles lone victory of the season came on Sept. 3 with a 3-0 triumph over Wofford. Winthrop is led offensively by Max Hasenstab with eight points on four goals, while Michael Smith has dished out two assists. In goal, Kenneth Perkinson has grabbed 24 saves and registered a 0.95 GAA. The Eagles are under the direction of second-year head coach Daniel Ridenhour.

The Spartans are facing Winthrop for the 15th time in program history with Upstate holding an 8-6 lead in the all-time series. Upstate recorded an exciting 5-4 victory over the Eagles in the last meeting on Sept. 16, 2015 at County University Soccer Stadium.
