Final Stats

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior Javier Tori became the first player in school history to reach 20 singles wins in three seasons with a super-set tiebreaker win over Jose Fantova Sicne as the USC Upstate men's tennis team won its final road match of the season, 6-1, at Atlantic Sun Conference foe Jacksonville on Saturday morning at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.

Tori also moved one win away from becoming the first player to reach 20 doubles wins in all four seasons with an 8-5 win with senior partner Renzo Airaldi over Fantova Sicna and Hector Garcia Aguilar, 8-5. The all-time wins leader in both singles and doubles, Tori won 20 singles matches as a sophomore, 24 as a junior and he improved to 20-5 as a senior with his 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 win at No. 2 against Fantova Sicne, giving him 78 in his career. In doubles play, Tori posted 21 wins as a freshman, 22 as a sophomore, 21 as a junior and his 19-6 record as a senior leaves him one from the 20-win plateau again.

Upstate (15-5 overall, 7-0 A-Sun) finished its road season with a 10-4, winning 10 matches on the road for the second straight year after going 12-2 in 2009.

The Spartans won all three doubles matches to take the point from the Dolphins (8-9 overall, 4-4 A-Sun), with junior Marco Linconir and senior Jack Roux posting an 8-5 win over Victor Vaz and Pitt Von Oertzen at No. 2 and sophomores Edgar Rodriguez and Ramiro Blanco adding an 8-1 wn over Logan Shalmi and Jaime Esteban to go with Airaldi and Tori's win at No. 1.

In singles play, Upstate won three two-set matches to clinch the match, as Linconir posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Aroon Khatter at No. 5 and Blanco notched a 6-2, 6-0 win over Esteban at No. 4 before Roux clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hector Garcia Aguilar. The Spartans then added a pair of super-set wins, including Tori's at No. 2 and the first dual meet win of the season by junior Ignacio Velez, who posted a 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 wn over Von Oertzen at No. 6.

Upstate returns to the friendly confines of the USC Upstate Tennis Complex for the final four matches of the season, starting with a 3 p.m. match against No. 70 Stetson in a match that will have much to say about the A-Sun regular season champion. The Hatters entered Saturday with a 15-3 overall record and a 6-1 mark in the A-Sun, just a half-match behind the Spartans.
