SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Ramiro Blanco claimed a pair of straight set victories, while his brother, Gonzalo Blanco, outlasted teammate Edgar Rodriguez, setting up an all-Spartan final at the 2011 USC Upstate Fall Classic.
Ramiro Blanco downed teammate Pierre Vernin, 6-2, 6-1, before claiming his spot in the final with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory over The Citadel's David Orces. Meanwhile, Gonzalo Blanco moved into the semifinals after USC Aiken's Patrick Stieberger retired with Blanco leading 3-1 in the first set.
Against Rodriguez, Blanco claimed the first set, 6-1, and was ahead 3-1 before Rodriguez rallied to claim the second set 7-6 (7-2). Blanco clinched his spot in the final with a 6-2 victory in the decisive third set.
Two of Upstate's doubles teams advanced to the semifinal round on Sunday. Rodriguez and Yvon Haessig downed Presbyterian's duo of Asis/Sprouse, 8-2. Ramiro Blanco and Matthias Kidler moved on to the semifinals with an 8-2 victory over PC's Walters/Snead.
