Men’s Tennis Set for Gardner-Webb Fall Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - After a strong opening weekend, the USC Upstate men's tennis team will make the short trip to Boiling Springs, N.C., for this weekend's Gardner-Webb Fall Invitational.

At the Upstate Fall Classic, five Spartans reached the quarterfinals and three individuals (Ramiro Blanco, Edgar Rodriguez and Gonzalo Blanco) advanced to the semifinals of the men's singles bracket.  Gonzalo Blanco defeated Edgar Rodriguez in three sets (6-1, 6-7, 6-2) before falling to his brother Ramiro in the final, 7-6, 6-1, on Sunday.

In doubles action the teams of Ramiro Blanco/Matthias Kidler and Rodriguez/Yvon Haessig advanced to the semifinals.  Blanco/Kidler claimed the doubles crown with an 8-4 victory Sunday afternoon.

Spartan Volleys…

• Five of six Spartans advanced to the quarterfinal round in men's singles at the Upstate Fall Classic while all three doubles teams reached the quarterfinal round.

• Ramiro Blanco claimed the singles crown at the Upstate Fall Classic with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over his brother, Gonzalo Blanco.

• Ramiro Blanco and Matthias Kidler claimed the doubles crown as the duo up-ended fellow Spartans Edgar Rodriguez and Yvon Haessig by a score of 8-4.

• The Spartans closed out the 2011 spring season with six consecutive conference wins en route to a third place finish.

• Upstate returns six players from last season's squad and welcomes three newcomers (Jacob Darling, Yvon Haessig, and Pierre Vernin).
