SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team opened play with split squads at the Elon Fall Invitational and Gardner-Webb Fall Classic on Friday afternoon as the Spartans take to the court for the second straight weekend.

At the Elon fall Invite Jamie Yates was the lone bright spot as he advanced in singles play over UNC Greensboro's Jimmy Roueche in straight sets with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. He will now take on UNC Asheville's Will Goldberg Saturday morning at 9 a.m. for a spot in the semifinals.

Gonzalo Blanco dropped an opening round match with Coastal Carolina's Leo Christofides, while Matthias Kidler faltered in straight sets to Old Dominion University's Carlos Lopez. Both players are slated to play back draw matches Saturday morning.

In doubles action, Kidler and Blanco battled Elon's Fortmann and Kowalski, but fell 8-6. The duo will take on Campbell in back draw action Saturday afternoon.

Four other Upstate players were in action at the Gardner-Webb Invitational as the Spartans play in the second of seven fall tournament.
