ELON, N.C. – USC Upstate men's tennis standout Jamie Yates ran the table at the Elon Invitational over the weekend, going 4-0 in the C singles flight to capture an individual championship.
Playing in just his second collegiate event, Yates turned plenty of eyes with his performance as he was taken to three sets just one time over the three-day event. The freshman opened the weekend Friday morning with a 6-2, 6-1 win over UNC Greensboro's Jimmy Roueche.
Yates took to the court twice on Saturday, starting the morning flight with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over UNC Asheville's Will Goldberg, before coming back in the afternoon and rallying from down a set to topple James Madison's Maxi Branth 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a three-set marathon.
The comeback victory propelled the Tauranga, New Zealand native to championship match where he battled UNC Greensboro's Darragh Glavin and claimed the championship in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
Yates and the Spartans return to action next weekend when they hit the road and travel to Tulsa, Okla., to take part in the All American Sept. 28-29.
