BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team split squads over the weekend and while Jamie Yates was cruising past the field at the Elon Invite, the Spartans were going to work with four players in action at the Gardner-Webb Invitational.

Junior transfer Viktor Selander ran through the "Flight 2" draw and captured a singles title with three consecutive victories. He opened the weekend with a victory over Wofford's Walker Heffron and followed in round two and took down Presbyterian's Gonzalo Asis in straight sets. He went up against Gardner-Webb's Ernest Alberch in the championship match and rallied to win 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.

Yvon Haessig and Jacob Darling saw mixed results in their respective flights, both dropping opening round matches but coming back and picking up wins in the second round.

The duo of Selander and Ramon Simonetti cruised to back-to-back wins to open the weekend in the "Flight 2" doubles draw, but fell 8-6 in the championship match to Gardner-Webb's Parker/Alberch.

The Spartans return to action next weekend when they hit the road and travel to Tulsa, Okla., to take part in the All American Sept. 28-29.
