KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team won seven matches on day one of the University of Tennessee Fall Invitational at Barksdale Stadium.
The Spartans were led by Yvon Haessig who advanced in the winner's bracket after straight-set victories over Winthrop's Chase Altieri and UTC's Ankit Chopra. Haessing will take on Tennessee's Patrick Taylor in the quarterfinals Saturday at 2 p.m.
Viktor Selander was equally impressive, picking up a three-set victory over Winthrop's Steven Patrick in the opening round and cruising past EKU's Florian Graskamp 6-1, 6-1 in the second round. Selander will look to secure a spot in the semifinals Saturday at 2 p.m. when he goes up against Penn State's Chris young.
Jacob Darling and Jamie Yates lost opening round matches, but bounced back with victories in the back draw to stay alive. Yates will battle Xavier's Mesa Mei Saturday at 9:30 a.m., while Darling is set to take on Xavier's Michael Moe Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Gonzalo Blanco also suffered an opening round defeat at the hands of Winthrop's Dylan Comerford, but battled back to take down Wright State's Jami Clark 6-4, 6-4. Blanco will take on Winthrop's Yuta Hirokawa Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m.
In doubles action, Blanco and Haessig teamed up to take down Western Michigan's Andrew Cahn and Marc Shideler 8-4, while Selander and Darling breezed by Wright State's Daniel Hyman and Aaron Madaris 8-5. Blanco/Haessig will take on a Penn State duo in round two, while Selander/Darling are slated to battle a Western Michigan pair in the semifinal round.
Day two of the Tennessee Fall Invitational is set to start Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. with doubles action.
