EUGENE, Ore. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team continued its trend of early season heroics Saturday afternoon as the Spartans battled past Eastern Washington University 4-3 at the OU Tennis Complex in non-conference action.

The Spartans (2-1) win their second 4-3 decision of the year as the bottom of the lineup came through late to help knock off the Eagles (1-3) in the second of three matches in as many days.

Upstate got things started with another strong outing in doubles play, picking up wins in two of the three matches to claim the all-important doubles point. The Spartans are now 2-0 on the season when leading heading into singles play.

Matthias Kidler and Viktor Selander found themselves in a fight at No. 1 doubles to start the day, but the duo could not overcome an early deficit, falling 8-5 to Joseph Cohen and Eduardo Martinez.

Needing to claim the remaining two matches, Upstate would do just that, picking up an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles behind Gonzalo Blanco and Yvon Haessig, while the No. 3 doubles match would turn into a classic.

Tied 7-7, Jacob Darling and Jamie Yates found themselves in a seven-point tiebreaker for the match and the pair would be nothing short of brilliant, dominating the tiebreaker 7-1 to emerge with the 8-7 victory and give the Spartans a 1-0 lead on the day.

Dejected from dropping the doubles point in dramatic fashion, Eastern Washington showed no sign of a letdown early in singles play, earning wins at each of the top three spots to take a commanding 3-1 lead. Blanco was on the brink of an epic comeback at No. 3 singles, rallying down a set to force a 10-point tiebreaker in the third set, but the junior fell 10-8 to Tomas Aranquiz.

With three singles matches still in play, Upstate would need to capture each point to pick up the victory. Selander, Yates and Carlos Tajes all rose to the occasion, easily knocking off the Eagles in each match to earn the 4-3 victory.

The Spartans will put a lid on their west coast swing Sunday afternoon, taking on the University of Portland with first serve set for 1 p.m. EST.
