Spartans Blanked by No. 39 UNC Wilmington
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team faced off against one of the best teams in the country Saturday afternoon, falling 7-0 at No. 39 UNC Wilmington at the UNCW Courts in non-conference action.
The Spartans (3-4) drop back-to-back matches for the first time this season, while the Seahawks (4-1) bounce back from a loss to nationally ranked Florida and improve to 3-0 at home.
Upstate opened the day falling at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, as the 53rd-ranked Wilmington tandem of Rafael Aita and Sam Williams knocked off Matthias Kidler and Yvon Haessig 8-3 at the top spot, and Jacob Darling and Gonzalo Blanco fell at No. 2 by the same score.
The Spartans dropped all six singles matches, but put up a fight in the process. Kidler picked up his opening set 6-2 at the No. 1 spot, but the Aita showed his No. 37 ranking in the country and rallied back for a three-set victory.
Haessig and Yates both pushed second sets down to the wire before falling 7-5 and dropping the points, while Darling and Simonetti each fell by the same 6-2, 6-2 score.
The Spartans will look to get back on track next Friday, traveling to nearby Winthrop for a 2 p.m. first serve with the Eagles.
