ELON, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team faced an early deficit Saturday afternoon on the road at Elon University, but the Spartans battled back in singles action to pick up a 4-3 victory in non-conference action.

The Spartans (5-7) get back on track in the second of two consecutive road matches, while the Phoenix (4-4) see their winning streak halted at three matches.

Elon quickly picked up the opening point of the day with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to give the Phoenix an early 1-0 lead. Despite the point being won, the No. 1 match rolled on and Yvon Haessig and Gonzalo Blanco battled their way to an upset victory, knocking off the 26th-ranked duo of Cameron Silverman and Stefan Fortmann 8-6

Gaining momentum from the upset of a ranked doubles team, Upstate entered singles playing needing a near perfect performance.

After dropping a match at the No. 2 spot, the margin of error narrowed for the Spartans and Matthias Kidler rose the occasion at the top spot, battling back from a set down to shock 26th-ranked Silverman 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 and give Upstate its first point of the day.

The Spartans surged ahead and took their first lead of the afternoon when Jamie Yates rolled in straight sets at No. 6 and Viktor Selander rallied from down a set to knock off Robert Lindgren 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot.

Elon's Ramon Kaufman then won a marathon match at No. 4 singles, taking down Ramon Simonetti 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 7-5 to knot the score at 3-3 with one match still in play.

Blanco would have the stage again and he made the most of the opportunity at the No. 5 spot, battling back from down a set to pick up a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory to clinch the match and give Upstate a 4-3 victory over Elon.

The Spartans return to action next Wednesday, welcoming Texas-Pan American to town for the final non-conference match of the season. Following a battle with the Broncos, Upstate will end the regular season with seven straight Atlantic Sun Conference matches.
