SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team is set for a pair of weekend matches in the state of Florida, traveling south to take on FGCU Thursday and Stetson Saturday in Atlantic Sun Conference action.
The Spartans (6-8, 0-2 A-Sun) have won two of their last three matches, but are still in search of their first conference victory of the season as they will battle the Eagles (8-7, 3-1 A-Sun) Thursday at 6 p.m. and the Hatters (13-1, 4-0 A-Sun) Saturday at 2 p.m.
- The Spartans are coming off a 6-1 setback at home to North Florida where Upstate captured just one of the three doubles matches and one of six singles matches against the Ospreys.
- Since earning a national ranking of No. 111 according to the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), Matthias Kidler has been brilliant with back-to-back singles wins in straight sets at the top spot, including a 6-2, 7-6 victory over North Florida's Moritz Buerchner. Kidler is 9-3 in singles action this season and has won five consecutive matches.
- Kidler should bet set for an epic match at No. 1 singles against FGCU, as sophomore Jordi Vives has won nine of his last 10 matches at the top spot in the lineup. The Eagles have recorded a 37-18 mark in singles play over the last nine matches.
- The Hatters are looking to start 5-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2008 season and take control of the A-Sun standings this weekend. Stetson's only loss of the year came against 17th-ranked Drake.
Last Time Out: The USC Upstate men's tennis team dropped its second consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference match to open league play Saturday afternoon, falling 6-1 to the University of North Florida at the Upstate Tennis Complex.
Next Time Out: Following a trip to the state of Florida, Upstate returns home for its final two home conference matches of the season next weekend, welcoming Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb to town in A-Sun action.
