Rock Hill, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team posted a 7-3 record Saturday afternoon on the first day of competition at the Winthrop Fall Shootout from the Memorial Courts on the Winthrop campus.
Sophomore Ramon Simonetti was a perfect 2-0 in singles play following victories over Jorge Varon of Chattanooga and JP Boada of Winthrop in the second division bracket. Simonetti opened his day with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Varon before besting Boada 6-1, 6-3 in his final match.
Senior Gonzalo Blanco turned in a 2-0 record of his own, posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over Derrick Brown of Chattanooga and a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Yuta Hirokawa of Winthrop in the third division singles bracket. Sophomore Carlos Tajes went 1-1 in the fourth division singles bracket with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Luke Saunders of Chattanooga.
In doubles action, Blanco and senior Yvon Haessig defeated Varon and Pasha Grigorjevs of Chattanooga in the division one bracket by a final score of 8-2. Not to be outdone, Simonetti and Tajes were successful in the division two bracket following an 8-4 victory over Luke Saunders and John Peacey of Chattanooga.
The second and final day of competition begins Sunday at 9 a.m.
