Rock Hill, S.C. – USC Upstate senior Gonzalo Blanco went a perfect 3-0 in singles action on his way to claiming a flight championship Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Winthrop Fall Shootout from Memorial Courts.
Blanco knocked off Cedric Dujacquier of Belmont 6-2, 6-4 in the third division singles flight to earn his second individual title of the fall schedule. Earlier in the season, Blanco was crowned champion of the B singles flight Sept. 15 at the USC Upstate Fall Classic. On the opening day at Winthrop, Blanco bested Derrick Brown of Chattanooga 6-1, 6-1 and defeated Yuta Hirokawa of Winthrop 6-3, 7-6 to earn his spot in the finals.
Blanco and teammate Yvon Haessig finished runners-up in the division one doubles flight after going 1-1 over the course of two days. The duo started the tournament with an 8-2 victory over Varon and Pasha Grigorjevs, but suffered a 7-8 setback to Mauricio Antun and Marko Lovrinovic of Belmont Sunday in the finals.
Sophomore Ramon Simonetti turned in a 2-1 record over the weekend and took second place in the second division singles flight. Simonetti defeated Jorge Varon of Chattanooga 6-3, 6-1 and JP Boada of Winthrop 6-1, 6-3 on day one, but dropped a 2-6, 4-6 decision to Marko Lovrinovic of Belmont in Sunday's championship match.
Simonetti went 2-0 in doubles action in the division two flight playing alongside sophomore Carlos Tajes, beginning with an 8-4 victory over Luke Saunders and John Peacey of Chattanooga on day one. Simonetti and Tajes capped the weekend with an 8-6 win over Dujacquier and Henrik Claesson of Belmont.
Upstate returns to action Oct. 11-15 when the Spartans take part in the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships from Knoxville, Tenn.
