Spartanburg, S.C. – Seven home matches and road contests with teams from the Southeastern Conference and the Big 12 highlight the 2014 spring schedule, USC Upstate men's tennis coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein announced Monday.
Upstate opens the season with six straight matches away from home, beginning with a Jan. 18 bout against SEC foe Tennessee. Upstate continues its road trip against Georgia State (Jan. 20), Gardner-Webb (Jan. 31), Presbyterian (Feb. 5), Campbell (Feb. 8) and UNC Greensboro (Feb. 9).
The Spartans welcome UNC Asheville to the USC Upstate Tennis Complex for their home opener on Feb. 14 before heading back on the road to take on TCU (Feb. 21), Lamar (Feb. 22) and San Francisco (Feb. 22) from Fort Worth, Texas.
Upstate opens the month of March with consecutive home matches against Nicholls State (Mar. 1) and Davidson (Mar. 3) before opening A-Sun play by hosting Stetson (Mar. 14) and Florida Gulf Coast (Mar. 15). The Spartans also welcome conference foes Mercer (Apr. 11) and Kennesaw State (Apr. 12) to the USC Upstate Tennis Complex later in the year.
Road matches against Lipscomb (Mar. 21), Northern Kentucky (Mar. 22), North Florida (Mar. 29) and ETSU (Apr. 5) complete the Atlantic Sun portion of the schedule. The Spartans will also face Georgia Southern (Mar. 30) and Tennessee Tech (Apr. 4) in non-conference action.
"We are all really excited about having the opportunity to face some really strong teams like Tennessee and Georgia State this year," Trittenwein said. Combine that with some of our traditional in-state rivals like Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian and it really makes for a challenging schedule. As always, our conference schedule will feature some great matches between schools that have developed a bit of a rivalry between each other, so it's a little bittersweet knowing that this will be the last season we will have the chance to face Mercer and ETSU in A-Sun play."
The Atlantic Sun Championships will take place Apr. 18-20 from Jacksonville, Fla.
