Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team posted its most lopsided victory of the season when it blanked Davidson 7-0 Sunday afternoon from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Upstate took control of the match early on and put together two convincing doubles victories to earn the point and go ahead 1-0. Ramon Simonetti and Yvon Haessig posted an 8-1 win over Evan Watkins and Ricky Saad at No. 2 before Matthias Kidler and Gonzalo Blanco bested Robert Lightbourn and Zack Zapatero 8-2 from the No. 1 position.
In singles play, Haessig put the Spartans ahead 2-0 following his 6-0, 6-2 victory over J.B. Gough at No. 5. Simonetti tallied the third point of the match for Upstate when he turned in a 6-2, 6-0 win against Connor Evins from the No. 1 position.
Rajanvir Dharni clinched the victory for Upstate with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Alex Howard at No. 6. Kidler picked up a 6-1, 7-6 win over Lightbourn at No. 2, while Jamie Yates was victorious 6-0, 6-2 over Watkins at No. 4. Blanco sealed the shutout for the Spartans with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Ethan Kallick at No. 3.
Upstate returns to action March 14 at 2 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Stetson to the Upstate Tennis Complex to open Atlantic Sun Conference play.
