Spartans Host USC Upstate Invitational this Weekend to Start Fall Season

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team ushers in its 2017 fall season this weekend when the Spartans host the USC Upstate Invitational from the Upstate Tennis Complex.

Competition begins Friday at 12:00 p.m. and will feature, along with Upstate, regional foes Furman, Presbyterian College, UNC Asheville, Kennesaw State and Belmont Abbey. The tournament will continue for the Spartans all day Saturday and conclude Sunday afternoon.

Upstate has six players scheduled to compete this weekend in Luka Eble, Ignacio Garrido, Francisco Neto, Fernando Bernardes, Ankush Arora and Samuel Schiano. Eble, Garrido and Neto are playing in the Black Singles bracket while Bernardes, Arora and Schiano are in the Green Singles bracket. In doubles play, the Spartans are sending out the combinations of Arora and Neto, Bernardes and Garrido, and Eble and Schiano.

Upstate welcomes back six players from last year's team that posted a 6-16 overall record and 2-4 mark in the ASUN. Felix Ewers was an ASUN Second Team All-Conference performer last season at the No. 1 singles position, while both Bernardes and Neto were named to the All-Freshman Team.

The USC Upstate Invitational is one of five tournaments the Spartans are scheduled to compete in during the fall. Upstate returns to action Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at the Davidson Challenge in Davidson, N.C.
