In 2007-08, USC Upstate embarked on a new journey for its athletics program, transitioning its sports team from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I as members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. After four years of competing as a transitional member of Division I, Upstate is poised to receive full certification by the NCAA with all teams eligible for postseason play in NCAA and A-Sun championships.

Spartans Open Play in the WBI Thursday at Elon
Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women’s basketball team, fresh off receiving the university’s first-ever big to a national postseason tournament, will return to the court for the first time in 18 days when it travels to Elon, N.C., to play Elon in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI). The Spartans are 1-1 all-time against Elon, but have not played since a 79-63 victory in Spartanburg on Dec. 8, 1992.

Spartanburg, S.C. – Two weeks after ending the regular season with a 17-12 record and its second-straight third-place finish in the A-Sun standings, the USC Upstate women’s basketball team will extend its season after earning its first national postseason tournament berth as part of the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI). The 16-team tournament field was announced Monday evening and the Spartans will travel to Burlington, N.C., to play at Elon Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. in the first round.

Spartanburg, S.C. - The USC Upstate women’s basketball team will close out the 2010-11 regular season Monday evening when it plays host to regular season champion Florida Gulf Coast at 5:00 in the Hodge Center. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Jan. 10, but a large snowstorm caused the game to be postponed until Monday night. FGCU owns a 5-1 lead in the series that dates back to when both schools made the jump to NCAA Division I in 2007. The Eagles took a 70-59 victory over the Spartans in Ft. Myers on Feb. 5, while Upstate took a victory the last time the teams met in Spartanburg.

Spartans Drop Road Finale at Campbell
Senior forward Chelsea McMillan (East Gasden, Fla.) posted game highs in points (32) and rebounds (12) as she finished with her 17th double of the season. McMillan’s strong effort was not enough as Campbell shot 57.4% from the floor and led wire to wire on Saturday en route to the 98-70 victory inside the Pope Convocation Center.

The Spartans claimed a 69-51 victory over the Bruins on Jan. 22 in Spartanburg and have won each of the last three contests in the series. Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate jumped out to a 20-point lead in the second half and watched as North Florida cut the lead to four late in the game, but the Spartans steadied the ship and held on for a 78-65 victory over the Ospreys Monday night in A-Sun women’s basketball action in the Hodge Center. Upstate’s Kendra Wallace also took sole possession of the school’s all-time three-point shooting record along the way.

Spartans Host Pink Zone, Senior Night Monday Against UNF
Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate will host its Pink Zone women’s basketball game Monday night when North Florida comes to the Hodge Center for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. The Pink Zone game will help raise funds in the battle against cancer with all donations given locally to the Gibbs Cancer Center. Several activities are planned for the game to help raise funds for cancer research. Cancer survivors will be honored at the game and a ceremonial tip-off will proceed the start of the game. Upstate will honor three seniors - Sharniece Wadelington, Kim Pitman and Chelsea McMillan - prior to the start of the game as well.

Upstate, PC Renew Rivalry Thursday Night
Spartanburg, S.C. - USC Upstate will make the short trip down I-26 to Clinton, S.C., to renew its rivalry with Presbyterian College Thursday night at 7:00 pm in the Templeton Center. The Spartans hold a 19-17 lead in the series that dates back to the 1977-78 season. They have won the last two contests in the series, including a 71-52 victory over the Blue Hose last year in Spartanburg, and are 8-9 all-time in Clinton.

Wallace Returns Home As Spartans Face Marshall
Spartanburg, S.C. - For USC Upstate junior guard Kendra Wallace, Wednesday night’s game will be a homecoming for the Hurricane, W.Va., native when USC Upstate travels to Huntington to take on Marshall in a non-conference battle at the Cam Henderson Center. Upstate Tips Off Season At Mississippi State Friday
Spartanburg, S.C. - Coming off of a 20-win season, its first in 15 seasons, USC Upstate will open the 2010-11 season on the road deep in SEC country when it travels to Starkville, Miss., to take on Mississippi State. The Spartans finished the 2009-10 season with a 20-9 overall record and finished third in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
