NORFOLK, Va. – The USC Upstate women's basketball (0-2) dropped its second-straight road contest as Old Dominion (2-0) defeated the Spartans 77-46 Tuesday night.
The Monarchs opened the first half with a 16-3 run and never looked back as the Spartans couldn't seem to rebound from the opening deficit. ODU took a 41-25 lead into the locker room at the half. The second stanza looked very similar as Old Dominion outscored Upstate 36-21, taking the 77-46 victory.
Despite the 31-point deficit, freshman center Brittany Starling (Sumter, S.C.) sparkled for the Spartans. The rookie paced the team with 17 points, going a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor and connecting on 2-of-4 free throws. Sophomore Shelby Hicks (Greeneville, Tenn.) flirted with a double-double, putting up 10 points and pulling down a game-high nine rebounds. She went 4-for-5 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. Hicks blocked one shot and swatted two, while Starling grabbed four boards and blocked one shot.
The Spartan bigs continued to lead the team as junior Valese McAllister (Twin City, Ga.) tallied eight points, going 4-for-4 on the night in just nine minutes of play. The 5-11 forward also snagged two rebounds to go along with one steal. Junior forward KeArrow Jenkins (Lakeland, Ga.) added four points for Upstate.
Senior Tyra Smith (Lawrenceville, Ga.) led the Spartans in assists, handing out a game-high six assists. The point guard recorded four points, three boards and one steal to help Upstate.
Old Dominion was led by Jackie Cook, posting a game-high 24 points. She also had five boards, three assists, five steals and once block. Galaisha Goodhope was second on the team, tallying 12 points, while Shae Kelley rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Monarchs with 10 points. Kelley paced ODU, pulling down seven rebounds, while Mairi Buchan contributed nine points on the night.
Ashley Betz-White dished out a team-best four assists for the Monarchs to go along with seven points and four steals. Myeisha Hall helped with three assists and six points, while grabbing three boards.
