MACON, Ga. – After posting back-to-back double-doubles in two conference contests, Brittany Starling of the USC Upstate women's basketball team was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Newcomer of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday.
This is the first A-Sun honor for Starling, who averaged a double-double of 20.0 points per game and 13.5 rebounds a contest to lead the Spartans in two games this week. The freshman center tallied a game-high and career-best 19 points in Upstate's win over Jacksonville Saturday before knocking down two more free throws against North Florida Monday, pushing her career-high to 21 points.
The rookie snagged a career-high 15 boards against JU, marking the first time an Upstate player has recorded 15 rebounds this season. She followed that performance with a 12 rebound effort against UNF Monday to complete her third double-double of the season.
Starling shot 61.5 percent from the floor, going 16-26 this week. The Sumter, S.C., native improved to 51.1 field goal percent on the season, ranking second in the A-Sun. She paces Upstate on the boards this season, averaging 5.6 per game.
"Starling has been putting in extra time lately," said head coach Tammy George. "It's good to see it paying off for her. She is a very coachable kid."
Upstate's 64-52 victory over the Ospreys Monday was the team's third-straight win and the most consecutive victories for the team this season. Starling has really come alive for the Spartans as of late as Monday's game against UNF marked the fifth-straight contest that she has led Upstate in either points or rebounds.
Starling and the rest of her Spartan teammates return action Saturday, Feb. 2, hosting A-Sun newcomer Northern Kentucky at 2 p.m. Follow Upstate women's basketball this season on your mobile device, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
