Spartanburg, S.C. – The 2017-18 season of USC Upstate women's basketball will begin on Friday night as the Spartans face East Carolina at 8 p.m. inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
Last season, Upstate posted a 9-21 overall record and a 2-12 ASUN Conference mark. Riley Popplewell earned a spot on the ASUN All-Freshman Team and started all 30 games. The Spartans will have to replace 1,000 point scorer Raven Jefferson.
A total of five newcomers join Upstate for the season in Michaela Gibbons, Latasha Johnson, Camilla Kilinc, Anda Kuzmina and Diamon Shiflet. Morgan Williams will see her first game action in 2017-18 after sitting out the previous year due to transfer rules, while Victoria Hadler returns after missing last season due to injury. Additionally, Upstate will have a pair of new faces on the bench in assistant coach Darian Riley and athletic trainer Kayce Wagner.
East Carolina went 11-19 overall and 2-14 in the American Athletic Conference last year. The Pirates return one starter while welcoming nine new faces for the season. Heather Macy is entering her ninth season as head coach and is 118-102.
Friday's contest is the first all-time meeting between the schools. Upstate is opening the season on the road for the ninth time in the past 11 years and holds a 22-20 all-time record in the season opener.
